Shifting Tides in Canada-China Investment Relations
Canada and China recently entered a two-pronged strategic partnership. Tariff reductions will add an immediate layer of support to Canadian trade, while foreign investment benefits will unfold more slowly over time. The stock of Chinese direct investment in Canada could grow to around $90-100 billion over the next five years. This projection includes a cumulative $15 –25 billion of investment above a scenario in which no agreement was reached.

The U.S. Dollar in 2025: Down, but not out
The U.S. dollar is coming off a difficult year, but concerns that global investors are fleeing it in droves are overblown. The depreciation over the past year still leaves the dollar close to 2024 levels on a trade-weighted basis and in line with its long-term average against many major currencies. Looking ahead to 2026, we see additional downside to the greenback of around 3%.

Japanese government bond yields soared today in a broad sell-off in long-dated bonds, as the implications of all parties' election promises on government debt became clear to investors. As of writing, the 40-year is up +29 bps to a record high of 4.2%.

Global growth has stood up to trade turmoil better than many feared earlier this year. Even with momentum expected to slow in 2026, it will be to a lesser extent than we expected three months ago. In contrast, the U.S. economy is forecast to gain a step as Fed rate cuts, the OBBBA and regulatory changes provide a tailwind. Canada is also an economy of contrasts.
