Canada: Gearing Up for Provincial Budget Season
Provincial governments are readying their 2026 Budgets. The tone across provinces is likely to be cautious as governments face ongoing fiscal deficits, rising debt burdens, and economic outlooks shaped by slower growth, trade uncertainties, and spending pressures. Canadian Consumer Price Index (January 2026)
Headline CPI inflation cooled a tick in January to 2.3% year-on-year (y/y) one tenth lower than consensus expectations. Even so, inflation was boosted by comparison to lower prices during the federal government's temporary sales tax holiday from mid-December 2024 to mid-February 2025.

Shifting Tides in Canada-China Investment Relations
Canada and China recently entered a two-pronged strategic partnership. Tariff reductions will add an immediate layer of support to Canadian trade, while foreign investment benefits will unfold more slowly over time. The stock of Chinese direct investment in Canada could grow to around $90-100 billion over the next five years. This projection includes a cumulative $15 –25 billion of investment above a scenario in which no agreement was reached.

Same, but Less: Prime Minister Carney Announces New EV Rebate and Auto Sector Strategy
On February 5th, Prime Minister Carney and Industry Minister Melanie Joly announced a revised strategy aimed at decarbonizing the transportation sector and supporting Canada's fledgling EV manufacturing industry. Many of the measures announced were similar to what was in place under Trudeau, but simply less stringent and/or less generous versions of those previous policies.

Where and What: Shifting Canadian Goods Exports
Canada’s exports, in dollar terms, are slightly lower year to date, but recent months’ volumes are down sharply, reflecting the unwinding of tariff front running. Exports to non-U.S. markets are being led by large gains to the UK (mainly gold), China, and parts of Europe. However, these increases are driven by a narrow set of commodities and do not fully offset declines in U.S. bound industrial goods.
